Clear-Span vs. Center-Column Mezzanine: How to Decide

One interior column can change your cost, your floor plan, and how the space actually gets used. Here's how to weigh it.

Every mezzanine spanning more than a modest width faces the same structural fork: carry the entire load to the perimeter with a clear-span design, or add one or more interior columns partway across the span to support the center section. Both are structurally sound, PE-stamped, code-compliant approaches — the right one depends on what's happening on the floor below, not just on preference. Here's how we walk clients through the decision.

What's Happening on the Floor Below

This is the question that decides it more often than any other. If the floor below needs to stay fully open — parking multiple vehicles, an unobstructed showroom, or wide equipment that needs a clear drive path — a center column isn't just inconvenient, it's a dealbreaker. Clear-span is the only real option. If the space below is general storage, a workshop with a fixed layout, or anything where you control exactly where things sit, a column or two can often be placed somewhere that never gets in the way — which opens up center-column as a legitimate, lower-cost option.

Span Width and Cost

Beam depth and steel tonnage increase disproportionately as clear-span width grows — a 20-foot clear span is a modest upcharge over a center-column equivalent, but a 40-foot clear span costs meaningfully more, because the beams carrying that entire load to the perimeter have to be significantly heavier. A center column breaks that long span into two shorter spans, each needing lighter beams. On narrower spaces the cost gap between the two approaches can be small enough that it's not the deciding factor; on wider spaces, it usually is.

Where the Column Actually Lands
